A delightful property situated in the heart of a beautiful UNESCO walled town, with all the facilities of a small town but only minutes walk from unspoiled countryside. Do you feel like escaping the rat race? There is a direct flight from London Luton to Poprad (25mins drive from Levoca) operated by the budget airline wizzair. This calm, natural paradise and retreat to unwind is only 2.5 hours (travel time) from London. Most facilities and sights are less than 30 minutes drive and hire cars can be easily arranged from ca 140Eur/week.

Historically, Spillenberg House (Est ca 1240) gained it's name from the physicians to the Hungarian monarchy from the 1500c to 1700c, who established their ancestral home in the building. Redesigned in the Renaissance style in 1550, this delightful and recently renovated (2010) home, has all the requirements you need to ensure you have a welcoming retreat after a hard day travelling, exploring, hiking, cycling or skiing.

Interaction with Guests

Ideally I would like to meet you on arrival and show you around the property (peak holiday periods) then leave you to enjoy the space. If I am unavailable I will send a representative to open the property and there will be a guide in English with details about the house (dos/donts/quirks - an 800 year old house has many), local and regional information. I will still be on call to deal with any concerns throughout your stay.

 

The Neighbourhood

This stunning medieval/renaissance town is surrounded by National Parks (Tatra mountains, Levoca Mountains and Slovak Paradise) and glorious warm summers (25-35c) make this perfect hiking and cycling country. Feel adventurous, try something new, explore this area and you will not be disappointed.

During the summer there are various summer craft fetes, cultural shows and a wealth of historical and cultural artifacts to visit. The town is the site of a significant Roman Catholic Pilgrimage (ca 500000 plus) every first weekend in Jun and is linked by UNESCO to Spis Castle (10 min drive) the largest castle in central Europe. In October the town host the Classical Musical Assembly "Levoca Indian Summer", with performances from top classical musicians from across Europe.

In the winter, the town is located in the center of many ski resorts and the runs are relatively "empty" when compared to the crowded Alps (no 30minute queues). The local town slopes (black, red, blue, runs with night skiing) is only a 5 minute drive. Ruzomberok and Tatras mountain ski facilities are also just a very short drive away. Given the location in central Europe, snow conditions are stable and last until mid Apr.

 

Getting Around

Airline links to Poprad direct from Riga and London. Kosice has direct flight links to London and Vienna. Krakow has various international flights and a taxi can be arranged for 50Eur (4pax/one way/2hr journey).
The main rail line runs to the nearby town of Spisska Nova Ves (10Km/6Eur taxi), connecting to Kosice (1hr) and Bratislava (4hrs) or Prague (7hrs).
Slovakia's main D1 motorway runs south of Levoca from West to East connecting the main cities of Bratislava and Kosice.

Smokers please only smoke in the balcony areas (outside but they are covered).

Once you are in Spillenberg House, please feel at home. Our only request is that you remember that the property is part of a UNESCO world heritage site and we are all beholden to keep it in good condition for future generations and for the benefit of all mankind. By staying with us, you are making a direct contribution to the renovation and upkeep of this magnificent monument (the owners make no profit). Please respect the buildings history.

Change out of outdoor footwear.
No large all male or all female groups (sorry - bad experiences)
